SLOW TOURISM IN LANDS OF SWAMPS
On foot or by bicycle where nature meets the ingenuity of man: the discovery of the Path of Reclamation
65 km to go on foot or by bike along the banks of the Canal Maestro della Chiana is the "Sentiero della Bonifica”, which runs from Chiusa the Monks of Arezzo up to Chiusi Scalo in the twist of streams and canals that served to drain the ancient swamp. Recently opened, is a path of great charm, ideal for lovers of hiking or walking in cycling who want to immerse themselves in an environment of extraordinary beauty as that of Val di Chiana. A route that adds value to the nature of a large open-air museum, a journey through the works of civil engineering and hydraulics, along the Channel Master of the Chiana and on the banks of Chiari of Montepulciano and Chiusi, thanks to which we created the remediation project in the Val di Chiana. A futuristic project, one of the few in the world where the work of reclamation is able to reverse the direction of flow of a river: the Clanis, ancient name of the river that ran through the valley into the Tiber. The reversal of water began running in the XI century, when tectonic movements caused difficulties in outflow to the Tiber, creating a huge swamp. Worked to reclaim Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei, Evangelista Torricelli and Leonardo Ximenes, up to the final work of the family Asburgo-Lorena, who managed to create one of the most fertile plains of central Italy. A series of works was designed by Vittorio Fossombroni, a technician of Arezzo, to whom the path is named: filled canals, drains, regulators, locks, tunnels, which served to drain the swamp and still provide water management. It’s in this tribute to ingenuity and to the wild beauty of the Val di Chiana that’s now possible to venture through the efforts of agencies for Tourism of Arezzo and Chianciano Terme Val di Chiana, together with the provinces to make available to pedestrians and cyclists this path, turned into a real journey through the historic and directional signs placed along the route. A major project to use this corner of Val di Chiana, dedicated to the lovers of a slow tourism, in harmony with the environment and full of history, tradition and genius.
